This weekend....
WAS AWESOME!! I ran around like a crazy person (ok, I know nothing really new there), but everything got done...I actually got enough sleep to function, and the Christmas program is done and was FABULOUS. While I wouldn't say it was perfect, it did go off without a hitch. One of the narrators had some difficulty and the piano solo was a little rough, but otherwise...se magnifique! I know I'm using lots of exclamation points but I'm so thrilled with it. We had:
a piano solo
2 vocal solo (one with a viola accompaniment)
a vocal duet
a wood-wind quartet
a vocal quartet
2 choir numbers
and some congregational numbers
It was a three cry (at least) for our Bishop! That means it was a success! I'm so grateful it went so smoothly (and that it's done!)

T-8 days and 11 hours
So my ward Christmas program is on December 13th. Because I'm in a singles ward I've arranged for the program to be done the Sunday before the Sunday before Christmas (does that makes sense?). I am excited and at the same time nervous as all get out about it. Excited because it's an amazing program about finding Christ in Christmas (which does so seem to be a theme I'm seeing this year). Nervous because the music didn't get out as early as I had hoped and I delegated a lot more this year than in previous years. Wish us luck in practicing and execution!

GRAD SCHOOL
I'm so EXCITED. This week I FINALLY got a response to my application to the Graduate School of Forensic Psychology at the University of North Dakota.
I'VE BEEN ACCEPTED AND STARTING SCHOOL IN JANUARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Huzzah! I'd pretty much given up hope. Now I just need to fill out all my paperwork and get going on processing classes and financial aid (ugh! there).
There are TWO really GREAT things about this. The first is that UND is my first choice. The second is that IT'S ALL ONLINE (aka: distance learning), so I don't actually have to move. Thus I don't have to worry about finding a new place to live (though I'm ready for a change of scenery so maybe somewhere else around here), a new job, or giving up my friends and having family so close.
Ah, life is good!!

A Boy and friends
So, I've debated about making this "public" for a while, and have come to the conclusion, I should just go ahead with it...I'm dating someone. His name is Dave (which can be awkward considering that's my brother-in-law's name). That's him in the picture above with his hawk, Sonja. One of his hobbies is falconry. He's a good man, and I enjoy spending time with him. Though both of us have pretty much reached a consensus that a long-term relationship is fairly unlikely given both of our life circumstances. :( He definitely keeps life fun and interesting.
Now for the friends part of the post...one of my good friends, Kim, broke her leg in three places about 2 weeks ago. Fortunately she didn't have to have any major surgery, but she is not doing very well. She went home from the hospital earlier this week, but had to be readmitted because she can't keep anything down. Do me a favor and if you pray, add her to your prayers. She could use them, because this is just the latest in a series of trials in her life.
Hope ya'll had a GREAT Thanksgiving!

My Grown-up Gratitude list....
This list is by no means comprehensive, however it does hit the high points,
1. FAMILY...As they say "The family is one of nature's masterpieces". I find as I grow older (and concurrently my siblings do as well), I enjoy spending more time with my family and relating (no pun intended) to my siblings on a more adult level. Though I will always be the "older sister". :)
2. FRIENDS...I have great friends to have the ability to help me stay sane and yet loose my mind at the same time. I love the dichotomy of it and them.
3. WORK...I have a job that I enjoy, that pays the bills, and I don't live in fear of being laid off or coming in one day and being told we're closing down.
4. CHURCH...I love my callings, the people I interact with, and the truths that I am taught every day as I learn more about the Gospel and it's teaching. Nothing compares to the inspiration that can be gained from seeking knowledge of God.
5. MY TALENTS...both overt and covert. I'm so grateful for the blessing of being able to learn easily, retain what I read and do well in school. I'm also grateful for my musical abilities and the inspiration I receive from them.
6. MUSIC...I'm so glad that this world has such wonderful and inspiring music (both secular and spiritual). Nothing else in this world has the power that music does.
I know those are hugely broad categories AND this type of post is a great, big cliche, but I couldn't resist taking the time at this time of year to remember exactly how blessed my life truly is.

Ode to a security system
So our security system at work was dismal. Camera were going out. It used VHS tapes that had to be changed every 24 hours (at least). It was black and white and blurry all over (no, that is not part of a joke). Basically, it was total...crap. So Tim (my GM) FINALLY got corporate's permission to upgrade/update our system. And let me just say.....HA-LE-LU-JAH, HA-LE-LU-JAH! It is amazing! For one, it's in color so we can actually SEE what's going on in the camera. Second, it uses discs that only have to be changed, like, once a month. Third, there is WAY less space wasted with the various boxes, monitors and accoutrement. I am in love with a security system. :)

Job Hunting, Waiting, Holidays and Cousins
So I'm currently sorta-kinda-maybe looking for a second part time job to keep me busy during the week. I'm also waiting to hear back from grad schools so I can start making plans for moving, school and all that entails. All this is roughly the equivalent of the hurry-up-and-wait dance. Not my idea of a fun game.
The holidays are rushing closer and soon to be upon us. Halloween was not a huge thing (had to work this year), but Thanksgiving and Christmas...Oye! We start practice for the Ward Christmas Program in Ward Choir next week and we STILL don't have the program totally finished and approved...yet another reason I strongly dislike delegation (hopefully this week, yeah? Fingers crossed) You've heard that old adage, if you want something done right...yadda, yadda. :) I have some brilliant ideas for Christmas gifts this year, hopefully they'll work out. We'll see. A lot of them depend on how well my sewing machine is functioning. That is questionable...and hand sewing and I do NOT get along. As well as my ambition level. ;)
Now for the cousin portion of this blog. I live with my grandmother, as some of you may know. She is an interesting, if odd, lady. But now we are joined by two of my cousins. The first is Cinci. Her husband, Eugene, is in boot camp (soon to graduate...less than a week now). She, her dog (Shelby) and her cat (Jasper) are staying with us at least until then, perhaps longer depending on Eugene's Tech School (i.e. where it is, how long it is, and whether she can stay with him or not). I do have to admit I have a strong preference for the dog over the cat. Just not really a cat person. At least that means that the likelihood of me growing up to be a creepy cat lady is minute. ;) The second is Aaron, my Aunt Pam's son. Aaron is an odd duck for sure, but he can sure haul yard waste around. He's been a big help to my grandmother around the yard and such. I get the feeling he's rather lost right now, and I'm just not quite sure how, or if I can, help. Time will tell I suppose. All in all, we have a full house. I enjoy it, usually, though it can be annoying when I've just woken up and REALLY don't want to talk yet, but people insist on talking to me and asking questions.
One quick gripe: I've been working out faithfully for the few months. In the last 3 weeks however (I've not changed my diet and workout 6 days a week including weight training), I have managed to GAIN 4 pounds. I know it's probably muscle but still...ARGH!

Just a quick thought...
I just wanted to share a scripture that has been on my mind. Whether you are LDS (i.e. mormon) or not, it's applicable and makes my heart warm everytime I think/read it. It's Isaiah 43: 1-3
1. ...Fear not: For I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by name; thou are mine.
2. When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee; when thou walkest through the fire, thou shall not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.
3. For I am the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour...

In Memorium

She was missed then, is now and will be for some time. Even the other animals seemed somehow melancoly when I went home to visit.

My diploma

So it finally arrived! Even though I technically graduated in June, my diploma has taken FOREVER to get here. It arrived sometime this past weekend (while I was out of town for work) because I found it when I got home on today. Needless to say I was VERY excited. I took a picture of part of it (see above) and sent it in a text with Ode to Joy playing and a Hoorah!
So this is it, I'm official. What do you think? And now the big question....WHAT'S NEXT?

Memories...
My younger brother Scott got home from his mission this past Monday. It's hard to believe that he had been gone for 2 years already. I really do have to say that the faith and optimism he demonstrated while in the field was an inspiration to me. I'm so grateful to have a brother that was faithful enough and worthy to serve a full-time mission and I know the people he served were blessed by his desire to be obedient to the will of our Heavenly Father. That said, I feel the need to reminisce. I have some great memories of Scott, a number of them even have photographic evidence. :)
When Scott was little probably only 3 or 4, Rachel and I liked to dress him up like a girl. One occasion in particular is documented in our family albums. He is wearing a leotard, tights and a tutu, along with make-up (LOTS of make-up) and a long black, ratty looking wig that my mom had gotten for Halloween one year. If you look the picture, you can't tell it's Scott. In fact, I saw it years ago and asked my mom who that girl was. *chuckle* Oh, good times.
Then there was the time that I was in my "movie director" phase. A number of the family movies from that time period demonstrate not only my omni-present ability to boss people around, but also what my siblings had to put up with as younger children. :) In this specific home video (that is remembered fondly and often by Rachel and I), I had dressed Scott up as a clown (we were doing a 'show' for Shauna's birthday). He had on my dad's tennis shoes, bright yellow Hawaiian shirt, and old teal sweatpants. Those pants were held up by my mom's (which she still has) rainbow striped suspenders. This was all topped off by a face full of paint and a neon orange bedazzled (remember that fad?) baseball cap. Anyway, I video taped him being a stubborn clown (you'd have to see it to laugh) that didn't want to do anything, then he decided to play music, so he reached down his pants and started pulling out random items (a shoe, a couple of baseballs, some flowers, a few handkerchiefs, etc) before finding a little plastic harmonica and horn (one of those cheap dollar store type things) from his shirt pocket. He played the horn by sticking it in his nose, and the harmonica at the same time. It was an interesting sight to behold. He ended his little skit by holding Erynn up with a plastic squirt gun, loosing his pants when the suspenders broke (unintentionally) and presenting Shauna with a bouquet of fake flowers. While this description doesn't do it justice, I still laugh just thinking about it.
The final memory I feel like sharing is much more recent. It was shortly before he left on his mission and Scott, Erynn, and I drove out to California to visit Rachel and Dave. Scott was driving and my navigational skills left something to be desired, so we ended up nearly in San Diego (we were heading for Whitter..near Huntington Beach), before we turned around and headed back north. It's fairly hilly country in that area and it was right around rush hour with a bit of fog. I was turned around in my seat talking to Erynn, who had just said she needed to go to the bathroom. As we crested a hill, I turned to face forward and all of a sudden there were a bunch of cars in front of us, all stopped. Scott's still cruising along at 70 mph and I go, "Um, Scott...cars." He still doesn't slow down, so I say "cars...Cars...CARS!" while hitting my imaginary passenger side brake. Finally he goes, "Whoa!" and hits the brakes, but we all know that we're not going to stop in time. I brace for impact and then next thing I know we're doing a Frogger impression in a very large car, going very fast, between other very large vehicles. We zoom in between the rows of cars (and I'm not talking on the shoulder), before Scott finally manages to slow down in an open area in a lane that miraculously appeared. As we all are gasping, the lane next to us starts to move and a van full of Mexicans drives by giving Scott an audible ovation. Then from the back seat, I hear a little voice go, "I don't have to go the bathroom any more." "Did you have an accident?" I asked Erynn. She says, "No, it all went back up." Needless to say, I had Scott take the next exit and I drove the rest of the way.
I am so excited to have Scott home and get to see him making new memories and see how he's grown and changed over the past 2 years away from us.

Trip to Utah
So we arrived in Provo last night about 8:30 local time. It was a looooong drive with waaaay too much road construction, but other than that it was rather uneventful and beautiful. I drove up to Provo for two main reasons: 1) to help Erynn get all her stuff up here and 2) to visit friends. I'm really excited about getting to see everyone. I'm going to miss Thomas since he's still up in ND working, but I get to hang out with Theresa, Parker and Evan, plus Carlie, her husband Rob and their son Timothy for dinner tonight. YAY! I also have a boatload of visiting to do tomorrow, mainly with members of the Fifield family. Also YAY! So basically I get to do some of my favorite things while I'm up here: enjoy having open windows 24/7, visit with old and new friends, play with children I don't have to take home with me, and enjoy scenic drives in the mountains. Life is good. I'll have pictures in my next post! :)

The Google verb meme....
I don't know if you've heard of this but I find it very amusing and thus couldn't resist doing it myself. Basically you type your name and a verb (in quotations) into the Google search engine and see what comes up. Here are some of the more interesting ones for me...
"Jenifer needs"
-the spot kept warm.
-to stay out of foul trouble.
-MORE followers (did you know I was a closet cult leader?)
-to go to bed (Hear, hear!)
"Jenifer wants"
-a hot tub to soak in.
"Jenifer hates"
-the homeless. (not true!)
-insomnia on a work day.
-when people are condescending to her.
"Jenifer eats"
-the family cat.
-lots of tacos.
"Jenifer wears"
-a white sailor's dress.
-her brother's underwear. (very, very, VERY disturbing thought)
I found number of other phrases, most of which are disturbing. Mainly because I found in this search that it seems that most Jenifers with one 'N' are either porn stars or in the sex trade somehow. Odd. Anyway...you should give it a try. See what you come up with!

Boring human being
I've decided I am a very boring human being, especially when I'm in one of my anti-social phases. I eat, sleep, work, and watch too many movies/read too many books. I'm also very fond of my routine. I leave the house about 2pm every Friday and work my 40 hours between then and 7am Monday, with a break on Sunday for church (usually there between 4-5 hours). I work at the library every Monday from the time I get off work until about 1:30, then head home to do it all over again. Maybe it's a good thing I've decided to move come September. It's time to break out of my rut and move onto different things. I am contemplating taking up some sort of hobby though, I'm not sure yet. Any thoughts?

Things I've forgotten (or hadn't realized)...
Now that I'm out of school there are a number of things of which I'm being reminded. Most of which have to do with time.
1. How much time school (and school work) actually takes
2. How much free time I have without school
3. How long it actually takes to sew a dress (don't even get me started on pants!)
4. How many books I read when I don't have things I HAVE to read
5. How good I am at killing time and not being bored
6. How much I enjoy cooking and making food for other people
7. How much I hate the news
8. How many new movies have come out since I buried myself in school
9. How bored I can get at work without a specific set things to do outside of actual "work"
10. How nice it is to have 4 days off and actually have 4 DAYS OFF.
11. How many thing I want to do but haven't had time to do that I now have time to do.
Ah, life is good. I love getting reminded of things and enjoying new things. Even if I am currently in one of my anti-social moods.

It's official...
As of 10am this morning (June 13th)-when the commencement ceremony was conducted at Portland State University-I am officially graduated. I should have my diploma in my hot, sweaty little hands by the end of July. Even though I didn't go to commencement, I did have a classmate pick up a program for me, and I'm having my honor cords sent to me. Life is good and I'm excited, even if I'm experiencing a little trepidation, about the upcoming months when I get to decide what I want to do next.

Doctor's appointment
Had my follow up doctor's appointment. This is what it amounted to...
1. Kidneys, liver, and thyroid-all fine and working properly.
2. Cholesterol, heart rate, blood pressure-also good.
3. Blood sugar high enough that I'm considered pre-diabetic. Need to get it under control otherwise I will have to take medication to help regulate it (HATE PILLS!).
4. Lump on my head is a "nonspecific cyst". Basically, that means it's a fluid filled sac (sounds yummy, huh?). Which of course is news to me, right? *eye roll*
5. Gonna have to have my scalp cut open to have my lump removed by a surgeon. Not looking forward to that.
Well, that about covers anything new in my life. Otherwise, I'm just chilling, enjoying my free time, and rejoicing I have my degree. Gonna take it easy this summer and focus on my "Healthier living" goals and play with my friends/family.
Ta!

Conversation...
So I've been sitting here for the better part of the evening/night just dinking around (mostly playing mahjong and other pointless online games) and contemplating life...both in general and in specific. During my the course of my conversation with myself, I've come up with a few things/questions.
1. I drove my a bunch of white crosses the other day. White crosses by the road typically means someone died in drunk driving accident. I couldn't help but notice they were surrounded by beer bottles. Sadly ironic or ironically sad?
2. What does it say about our society when my supervisor says "your eyes should be crossed with how much you read" and he only sees me once a week? Shouldn't I have a new book every week?
3. Justifications are wonderful things. I've found I have the ability to justify just about anything I reeeeally want to do.
4. Some medical processes seems superfluous. I have a lump on my head (not a bump) that it slightly squishy (i.e. it has some give when you press on it). I went to the doctor who sent me to get an ultrasound of it. All the person doing the ultrasound really said was "looks like there's some fluid in there". Ya think??
I'm almost completely graduated and still not really sure what I want to be when I grow up. Well, to be more correct, the thing I most want to be (a hermit) I can't be, so I have to find something else cuz I like to eat. Guess it's time to re-read my patriarchal blessing and so some more soul searching. *sigh* I don't like this game. I like it better when Heavenly Father gives me a nudge in the right direction, and I can just run with it.
On a happy note...Rachel and Dave are back in the Valley. They are officially Phoenicians again. I'm very excited.

Ahhhh....
So school is almost out (just a week left) which means I only have a little bit of homework to do (i.e. 2 papers which total about 4 pages, and an oral exam-hate those!). Thus I will have more time to devote to other pursuits such as watching movies, reading books and all sorts of laziness. I do, however, also plan to focus more on living healthier, hence my decision to participate in the afore mentioned "Choose Healthy Living" thing started by a friend of mine. Wish me luck with that!
I am excited to announce that I will be graduating summa cum laude but in absentia since I'm not flying up to OR just for a commencement. I reckon I'll have a huge blowout once I've my diploma in my sweaty little hands. Life does promise to get interesting in the coming months. So many things to do...fortunately mostly indoors so I can actually do them w/o wanting to die!
Cheers!

In the Southern Baptist/Gospel Style (no offense meant to anyone)...
Ah have seen the li-ght and ah am a be-liever! Ah knooow the road I must take to reach my go-als! That road may be thorny-a and hard to climb-a but ah know ah will reach that end and find my pur-pose in this lahfe! Ah knoow the truth and the truth is among us!
Well that's enough of my silliness. Tee Hee. I couldn't resist. Though it probably sounds much better in my head than when you're reading it.
In any case, due to the inspiration of my sister and other friends, I am going to strive to live healthier. Kathy, a friend of mine, has been inspired to start something she calls "Choose Healthy Living". It starts on June 1 and is a way, for those of us who have decided to participate, to set and meet our goals to live healthier and not just in regards to exercise and diet. Wish me luck! :)

Enough of that...
After my last post which was full of melancolic angst, I want to make a list of things I love.
1. Playing in a cold rain then going inside to dry off and have having hot chocolate.
2. A good book that makes you sigh when it's finished.
3. My mom's chicken-cheese casserole. Even the leftovers are great!
4. The smell of fresh baked bread.
5. Crawling into my own bed after a long work weekend and snuggling in with my pillows.
6. Hugs by someone bigger than me (who does real hugs not weird A-frame hugs).
7. Talking to my siblings as they grow up and experience life.
8. Buying random presents for people when I KNOW they'll like it.
9. Catching up with old and new friends when I haven't had a chance to speak with them in a while.
10. The feeling of accomplishment when I finish my homework and/or my regular work.
11. Playing Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata or Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor perfectly.
12. Waking up to the smell of pancakes and bacon.
13. Not having to set an alarm clock.
14. Cooking...especially for other people who don't mind me experimenting on them. :)
Obviously these are not huge things nor is this list a complete compilation, but sometimes making lists of the things in life that are good is the best way I know how to fight ennui or the blues. :)

Introspection
There are hundreds of ways people use to cheer someone up at a lost opportunity or a change of life circumstances.
"When one door closes, another opens."
"When a door closes, open a window."
"An ending is only a new beginning."
You get the point. Recently, since graduation is coming up, I've been giving a significant amount of thought to what the next step in my life should be. I've been researching, pondering, praying and researching some more. I have grown to hate saying such as those above. You see, for the most part, I like my life. I have a routine that works for me, friends and family I love and enjoy being with, and a job I find satisfaction in and, that while not great paying, does pay the bills and lets me do those things I really love. Not everyone can make those claims. So why is it I feel I have to shake up my life and do something different? I almost wrote "feel the need", but I don't really. Mostly what I feel is dread. I really dislike changes. They are difficult and not usually very user-friendly. While they can sometimes be for the better or end up good, the transition period can be, at best, a pain.
I like how someone finished that saying, "When one door closes, another opens". She said, "...but it can be hell in the hallways." Too true.

Apple pie and strange facts
So I just finished compiling a bunch of stats for one of my classes and putting them into some graphs and tables (LOVE MS office 2007!-usually) and decided to take a break and enjoy some apple pie and look up strange statistics. Here are some of the best (in my humble opinion) and my associated comments:
1. Tablecloths were originally meant to be served as towels with which dinner guests could wipe their hands and faces after eating. (I knew they were good for something...except the lace ones. Those are just useless.)
2. The Nobel Peace Prize medal depicts three naked men with their hands on each other's shoulders. (Not sure how I feel about this.)
3. In the year 2000, Pope John Paul II was named an "Honorary Harlem Globetrotter". (Think he played in his robes?)
4. Men are 6 times more likely to be struck by lightning than women. (Hahaha!)
5. Donkeys kill more people annually than plane crashes. (So stay away from donkeys!)
Here are few interesting laws...
1. In Virginia, the Code of 1930 has a statute which prohibits corrupt practices or bribery by any person OTHER THAN political candidates.
2. In the state of Colorado, a pet cat, if loose, must have a tail-light.
3. In Washington State, you can't carry a concealed weapon that is over 6 feet in length.
And my all time favorite that clearly demonstrates the danger in dating...at least if you're a spider:
"A study of spiders shows female wolf spiders will eat strange-looking males that try to mate with them, but spare and even hook up with familiar-looking males...The female, which is slightly larger, can choose a) to mate, b) to run away or c) to eat her suitor. Apparently, running away is not a very frequently used option..... "
HeeHee. Oh, to be a female wolf spider. Take care of two birds with one stone when it comes to strange men...a meal and you don't have to worry about him bothering you again!

Books, books, books
I just got back from the Chandler Public Library's Semi-annual booksale. Everything half off AND some 5 for a $1. This means that I got 30 book for about $12. YAY! This makes me very happy especially since I missed my usual book stock-up event: the VNSA annual booksale In 2008 I got to it and purchased almost 150 books (lasted me a good part of the year) for just over $100. Buying books AND saving money...what could be better? (Besides buying shoes AND saving money...which, incidentally, I did today too!) I love the library. It is in my top 3 favorite places to be. Not counting the libraries that have decided to serve coffee inside the building because that means you can only smell the coffee, not the stacks and old books. If they made a perfume that smelled like books, I'd wear it. But then I am a bit of a dork...and I'm starting to ramble and make very little sense. Thus, I shall hie myself off to bed and sleep for a few hours before work. Catch ya later, alligator!

Short and Sweet
Saw the appartment Rachel and Dave are going to be living in until they can find a house once they moved back to AZ--nice place.
Got everything on my "To Do" list done on my days off, not counting the school stuff. Have a new "To Do" list now.
Saw "X-Men: Origins" a little while back...awesome. I don't care what anyone else says, if a helicopter explodes it's a great movie (see also Live free or Die hard). :)
Still slogging through those articles...takin' longer than I thought, though most aren't quite as bad as I was expecting...still not terribly interesting though. Rather be reading a book...or watching Eureka (great show!).
Taking a break right now from school and work stuff to enjoy some rootbeer and NCIS. I love the internet.
Only 3 weeks and 3 days of school left!!!!
Bye!

Filler...
So I was all gung-ho to do a nice blog with a bunch of pictures I took when I realized that I don't have my micro-card reader for my computer AND I've the wrong laptop so I don't have the camera software to download the pics directly, so here is a filler and a little bit of catch up...
1. I have five weeks and one day until I am officially finished with school and will have my Bachelor's degree. I won't however actually have the diploma in my hot, sweaty, little hands until mid to late June.
2. Because I only have five weeks and one day left of school and am a procrastinator I have 2o-odd articles (most 10-15 pages in length) to read in the next two weeks. You'd think that wouldn't be too bad, right? You'd be wrong.
3. We had Stake conference last week. I didn't go...but I'm told it was pretty good.
4. We had Ward conference the week before that. I did go...it wasn't good.
5. I volunteer with a local domestic violence shelter and they are having one of their major annual fund-raisers. This means, since I help in the office, I have 300+ calls to make to verify addresses in the next month. Yay for me!
6. I've decided that I am going to start saving up for three major purchases: a serger, a nice/good standing mixer (with pasta attachments!), and I can't remember the third, but I will eventually. I hope. (Any recommendations for specific products would be appreciated!)
7. While I believe a girl can never have too many shoes, books or earrings, she can have too many clothes. Thus I have decided if I want more clothes, I must make them myself. We'll see how that goes.
8. I built some bookshelves (pics at a later date). They didn't turn out so well. I think I need more practice. :^S
9. I have recently cataloged and organized my books. I hadn't realized just how many I had until I had to TYPE ALL OF THEM INTO AN EXCEL SPREADSHEET. It's ridiculous. I think the most amusing part though is that I can picture most of them or remember parts of almost all of them. In my defense, I have read them all. Mostly.
10. I have two major projects to work on in the next few months: recovering my chaise lounge that has been sitting outside collecting dust (literally) but hopefully not bugs and re-finishing my big old desk/shelf thingy (I got it used-free-and it's covered in stickers)
11. I thought I lost my favorite ring this past week. It's got my most favorite stone in it (mystic fire topaz). I didn't loose it. I found it in my suitcase in with my q-tips...where I put it so I wouldn't loose it. :)
12. I have less than a year until my car is completely paid off. WHOO-HOO!!
So that's mostly it. I can't think of anything else at the moment, but then it's about 11:30pm (not really late, but it feels later) so I have given myself permission not to think much any more.

The Weather Channel
We have a TV in our lobby at work, and I usually change it to the Weather Channel (or CMT if I'm feeling a little honky-tonk). Last night they were talking about all the tornadoes that have just recently occurred and the damage that was done. One of the weather people made an interesting statement. He said that it seem like every year around Easter, something happens to make people feel the need to go to church and give thanks for their lives and blessings. While I'm obviously paraphrasing, I find it fascinating that a national weatherperson would say something like that...and how true it is. Perhaps, though often tragic, this is Heavenly Father's way of reminding us what life is really about and what we should be doing on a regular basis-thanking Him for our blessings. So, this Easter season, I feel it's important to give thanks for my blessings including amazing and supportive friends and family, wonderful church leaders, a strong and ever growing testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and of course, my gratitude for the Atonement and sacrifice that Jesus Christ made for us so many centuries ago. How fortunate we all were to have had General Conference the week before Easter and for the reminder that provides us of our inspired leadership. I am so blessed to have the truth in my life and know the love of my kind and generous Heavenly Parents and elder brother, Jesus Christ. What are you grateful for this Easter?

Memories
So I just got off the phone with Erynn (the sister at BYU in Provo), and we were talking about sanity and the relativity (or relatives) thereof. More specifically when I actually became less than sane. I blame my younger siblings, but upon thinking about it, perhaps I was never quite sane. Here are a couple of memories that come to mind...
Shortly after Rachel was born, I was feeling neglected. I'd had my parents to myself for 3 and 1/2 years and didn't care to share. So I decided one night, after bed, that I wanted some attention and the way to get it was to fall out of bed...or rather make my parents think I fell out of bed. So, I quietly got out of bed and then jumped loudly on the floor to make a loud thump sound, quickly sat on the floor and started screaming my little head off. Sure enough my parents came running and when they asked what happened, I whimpered a little and said, "I fell out of bed." Cuddling and petting occurred for a short period of time before my dad, heartlessly I felt at the time, told me I was fine and to go back to bed.
The one and only time I went to daycare. My parents say they took me the day before, and I loved it. I was running around, playing and bossing the other kids around (see I've always been bossy), just generally having fun. The next day was a different story (and the one I really remember). My mom dropped me off. As soon as she left I started crying. Everyone ignored me. The other kids were watching He-Man. Apparently I was only there for about 30 minutes before my dad came to get me, but it seemed a lot longer than that. To this day, I have an irrational hatred for He-Man.
I'm sure there are other examples of my insanity or perhaps lack of sanity is a better phrase, but I can't remember them...or I don't want to share them. Either way, sanity is certainly relative. My relatives prove it!

Parents
Unlike most of my Sundays, today was not a great day for me. The lessons and speakers were wonderful but my attitude was not where it should have been to properly appreciate and utilize them for a number of reasons. I am working on it and am doing better, but I do have to say that part of that is because of my dad. I realized today that I don't think you can properly appreciate your parents until you are an adult yourself (perhaps not even fully until you are a parent). I know that I didn't...the adult part, not the parent part. :) This came to mind because of a text my dad sent me. Now I love my mother. I am proud to say that she is one of my best friends, and I am blessed to know that I can take anything to her and she'll listen and give me wise counsel. She give great hugs, feeds me my favorite foods when I visit and is willing to listen to me vent. What more can you ask for in a friend and mom? My dad, however, gives me something different. He provides both practical advice about things like my car and computer and needed absurdity. Here is why I say that: after church, I sleep. Today I woke up to a text from my dad. This is what it said, "they're out there". That's it. Nothing else. From that text we proceeded to have a quite ridiculous and entertaining texting conversation. Here is a snippet of it (with direct quotes)...
Me (response to previously mentioned text): and they have special voodoo powers
Dad: ya u betcha
Me: That's why I wear the tin foil hats
Dad: I has a luminum soot. It pertex mi fum da radiashun
Me: Does urs rip? I usta wear one but found it ripped in themost awkward places
Dad: I fixt it wid duck tape & choklet
Me: Mmmmmm...choklet. I like choklet, but duck tape doesn't taste so good.
Dad: Drawz the beez to help mi fli
Me: beez help u fli? I don't fink I'd like dat. I like da ground just fin, tank you verry much. And beez have stingers dat r ouchy.
Dad: deez r spechul traind stingerless beez, cald da grat himalayan honee bee.
I think you get the point...all in all it was a crazy and funny conversation. I love when he sends me random odd texts. We've talked about how he part of an advance phalanx of aliens from a planet (whose name I don't remember) far, far away that are thinking about taking over Earth, the nature of dark, what direction is what and a number of other things. I want to close my post with my favorite text I've received from him yet...
"I passed the test I went to Chicago for. I am a certified information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)...So now you must address us as His Royal Highness, The Dad. Ok."
I love my dad.

Just stuff...
So I just got my final grade for the past quarter that ended this past Sunday. All A's! I'm pleased if a little grumpy because of one class that was not as high as I thought it should be. In any case, I had to do a final powerpoint presentation with photos from my community for my Healthy People/Heathly Places class and I thought I'd share some of my favorite photos from it with you (the top two are my favorites)...

School....
So I finished my last final on Sunday night and as of this moment I currently have 10 weeks of actual school (aka: 1 quarter) left before I'm officially graduated. I'm very excited! And am celebrating this achievement by doing as little as possible for the next two days.

Ostrich Festival
So this past weekend, we held the Ostrich Festival here in Chandler. It's an annual event (been going on since the 80s I think) that happens every spring. I didn't get to go this year, but here are some pictures from the past years. It's always a blast. Very fair/carnival like. Great crowds, food and fun!
I'm told ostrich riding is an art. It just looks silly to me, but...
"Yee-Haw! Ride 'em cowboy!"
"Run away, Run away!"

Camels are one of them and you've never seen funny until you've seen a camel race.
And my personal favorite...the pig races (I think Number 2 got distracted somewhere).
There are other critters around like a petting zoo with goats and horses and such and a pony ride for the munchkins. The think I found most amusing...when you go to the ostrich festival, not only can you see real live ostriches and watch them race and try to peck people, but you can eat and wear them too. Slightly disturbing, but I find it morbidly amusing at the same time.

Room redecoration
So about 6 months ago I decided to redo my room. I got all gung-ho about it and pulled stuff apart and bought various fabrics and such, then....well, nothing. My room has been a mess since. I did finish my blackout curtains, more from necessity than desire, but I've decided the next couple week are going to be dedicated to finishing this project. I haven't done much so far because things never work out quite as I plan, but here's what I've done so far: I recovered two lamps (very pleased w/ the results), designed/measured/calculated supplies necessary for my book cases, hung pictures/mirror/hats/various wall stuff, figured materials needed for my new earring holder, bought everything but the actual lumber for my new bookcases and finished the cover for my comforter to match my new room stuff. I did organize all my plastic tubs of stuff and labeled them. I also loaded up mydesk unit (got bookshelves and desk) in my room, though it does need to have all the stickers removed (that's what happens when you get something for free, always a catch). I am looking for handles so my dresser and desk unit match, but that is proving trickier than I had hoped due to size of handles and coloring desire. Here are some pictures of my finished lampshades. Like I said, pleased with the results.
This is the biggest lampshade. It started off as a red silk type shade. I am using this fabric (something I've had FOREVER) as the basis for the room. You can't see it well, but it's got this kind of turquoise/teal color in the leaves...that's the color of my curtains and some of the pillows. Comforter cover is that deep rose color.
This is a smaller lampshade (bedside table size). The color worked with the room theme, so I just applied some trim (super fun) and cut out some of the leaves and flowers from scraps of the material I had. Then I used fabric paint to trace around and inside the cutouts after glueing them to the shades.
(small lampshade from a different angle)
(another pic of the big lampshade w/ the ribbon I used...still not sure how I feel about that ribbon.)

A few of my Favorite things...
It seems the theme for this past weekend was love (go figure since it was Valentine's Day weekend), so with that in mind I decided to devote this post to things I love. I have four major loves in life: shoes, books, cooking and sleep. The order in which they fall fluctuates depending how much I've had of each recently, but I love shoe and book shopping (even if I don't ultimately end up buying something) if only because of the smell of the store, though bookstores are starting to stink like coffee with makes me sad :( I also love cooking and experimenting on my friends though I don't get to do it as often as I'd like. I believe that presentation of the food is almost as important as the food itself. If it doesn't look good, no one will want to eat it. I love setting the table with china and goblets even just for a casual meal. It give it a certain je ne se quois. As for sleep, well that's just self explanatory. And as much as I love sleep, I abhor the snooze button. I'd rather set my alarm for the last possible minute (ask my friends that I went to Disney World with...I've streamlined my morning routine) and just pop out of bed when it goes off, then doze for a few minutes to have the horrible sound of the alarm go off AGAIN over and over. Though I will say that there have been time where the only thing getting me out of bed is the realization I will get to go back to bed in 12 hours (or however long). I firmly believe it should take no longer than 15 minutes to get ready and go in the morning. 20 if you do make-up and want breakfast. But I'd rather stay up late then get up early...my poor children if I ever have them. :)

Title definitions
So I've recently been working on my fiction writing. I have about 3 or 4 books started but not finished. I have the hardest time with the middle of my books. The beginnings go smoothly and then my brain skips to the end. Sigh...makes writing the middle difficult especially when my characters do not want to cooperate. As for the title of my post: I know we're not supposed to judge a book by it's cover, but how often do we judge one by it's title? So I often re-title my books as I go along so that it fits better or is catchier or what have you. I do have to say that I am proud of myself because I have a fairly decent short story done...maybe I'll post that here sometime. I dunno. Also I feel the need to explain the title of my blog for those who are not as strange as I. In "Through the Looking Glass" by Lewis Carroll, the white queen tells Alice, "Sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast". One of my other favorite quotes from Lewis Carroll (and I have many because they are so nonsensical they are wise) is from "Alice in Wonderland" (which is different from "Through the Looking Glass" though they both contain Alice and Wonderland). The king says, "Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop." Thoroughly wonderful advice, no?

Superbowl Sunday
So it is officially Superbowl Sunday, and while I have no particular feelings one way or the other about it, my local team (the Cardinals) are in it this year so Superbowl parties abound-more so than normal. Should be interesting, though I dread the drunks if we win. :^S Life was good, if busy, this past week. Not much to say cuz I didn't do or think too much. Oh, have been good about going to the gym-yay me! Also went to a baby shower today were there were more pregnant women than not. This is indicative the sanity that does sometimes prevail. Namely, being preggers in AZ in the summer is miserable so most try to time their pregnancy to fall during the winter months. Life's been quiet but that won't last long. It never does. So my goal for this week is to work on finding a new pianist for Ward Choir (since the one I have is engaged and wants to go to church w/ her fiancee) and visit the family. And now I'm off...gonna argue with my computer and find out why it won't open pdf files. Fun, no?

Sunday...again
So it's Sunday again. Another week and flown by, and I'm sitting in an exhausted stupor. However life is good. I have all my limbs, got to eat a chocolate frosty (yum!), read about my friends' exciting lives, finally do Christmas with my best friends (got some stellar earrings, bracelet and necklace-thanks you guys!), finished a rather large project, AND had a stupendous lesson today in Relief Society on lifting where you stand (if you haven't read the talk-it's from the priesthood session of this past conference-you should read it). As I said, life is good, if crazy. And best yet...I'm going to take my two youngest siblings out to CA to visit Rachel and Dave and go to Disneyland. Always a good time.

AAAARRRRGH! (yes, it was THAT good).
So the past few days have been insane. Here's a brief recap cuz I have things I really should be doing instead of blogging.
Monday: MLK day which I absolutely HATE because everything is closed and I could get nothing done! Did sleep most of the day, so that was nice, but still: nothing got done.
Tuesday: spent all day doing homework for this ridiculous class I have called Healthy people/Healthy places. Also read for my "Exploring the dimensions of Human Sexuality". I am too single to be reading some of the things I read.
Wednesday: it was like last Wednesday all over again only longer. I did get to forgo a work out though. We had quarterly supplies to pick up from Sam's Club up in the Valley (about 30 min. drive)-4 pallets worth. Crazy *shaking head*. I did get to eat at one of my fave restaurants: Olive Garden. Yum! Then we had two HUGE donation pick-ups w/ mounds of furniture. All in good shape so it has decent resale and the ladies in need appreciate it I'm sure. I did get to spend the day with Christy who is one of my favorite people. Left home @ 8:20a, got home at 7p, showered and fell into bed. Forgot I had homework due at midnight and slept until 3a. Bad on me!
Today: Spend the morning cleaning and running errands. Got home about 10 mins ago. Put on my jammies and am all settled in for more homework and being fiscally responsible (i.e. balancing my checking acct). Oh, and I joined a gym. We'll see how that works out for me. *eye roll*
Catch ya on the flip side!

I like monkeys
The title of this post has absolutely nothing to do with anything, but I thought it sounded fun. So it is about 5:30am on Sunday morning...that means I have 9.5 hours left in my work week and I have worked 30.5 of my 40 hours in the past 38.5 hrs (started work on Friday @ 3). I LOVE 16 HOUR WORK DAYS!! No sarcasm, it's nice to have three days of nothing but work (and school) and then four lovely days off for my own stuff. Gives me a good chance to be lazy, do my volunteering, read, watch movies, and do my projects.
So I got my taxes filed: love turbotax.com. You should try it. It is quick easy and there is no actual paper involved. Getting a really good tax return this year. Goal is to put half in an IRA, buy a decent digital camera and just leave the rest along for emergencies. *eye rolling* Not sure that'll really happen.
This weekend we've been busier at work than we have probably since last spring. We've been totally booked for the past two nights. To give you an idea of how dead things have been, I could go through an 8 hour shift (11p-7a) and see nobody at all. It was nice, if a bit quiet. But this weekend, I learned the meaning of when it rains it pours. Literally. We had a pipe burst in the ceiling of the first floor. Fortunately it wasn't in a guest's room but guess where it was...wait for it...it was in the electrical room. The room that we have our phone and pay-per-view movie stuff in, as well as our satellite channels stuff. I heard water running, went to see if it was the ice machine and saw water leaking from under the door. I opened the door and it was raining inside. I was soaked from head to toe. It was not good juju, not good juju at all. I was lucky enough that it was on Friday before 5p so I could get someone out AND nothing was damaged. I spent hours mopping the mess up and dealing with about 75 check-ins, but what's life without a little drama, huh? I don't have little people around, so guess I have to do it myself.
I am proud of me though, I got 3 quizzes, 5 discussion posts (one pretty long as it was a original argument in a debate), 200+ pages of text and 3 articles read for school. Sigh, I'll be glad when school is done for the summer and I can have a few months off before starting grad school. Speaking of school we had to take this authentic happiness quiz for my healthy people/healthy places class... quiz was kinda a waste of time (class definitely is!), but not too bad. Mostly, I dislike those self-examination type things.
Oh, and I decided I'm weird. Not just kinda weird, but really a lot and a bit dorky too. :) Just thought I'd share.

Exhausted
So today was the second wednesday of the month. And what does that have to do with anything you may ask...well, the second wednesday of every month is donation collections with a domestic violence group I volunteer with (Against Abuse, Inc). The problem was that I forgot about it. That means that I stayed up until 4am working on homework and various projects (I'm big on the projects) last night and therefore did not get enough sleep. Now I understand that many people don't get enough sleep, but I NEED MY SLEEP. In the words of my brother-in-law's brother (who is in my ward choir): Jeni gets really cranky when she doesn't get enough sleep. However before I elaborate on today, let me tell you about yesterday. Grandma (who I live with) had a doctor's appointment at 8am. This means we left about 7:40 then came back to the house at 7:50am because she couldn't remember if she had turned off her bedroom space heater. :) So we got to the doctor's office, checked in and then waited. When she finally went in I went to run errands. I am pleased with my list: I got her van tires checked, went to the bank, and returned some DVDs (X-files: I want to believe and Babylon A.D.-good movies). Then picked up grandma and we went to Wal-mart...we both needed socks, very exciting I know but I also go some makeup (I'm wearing it almost every Sunday now) ON SALE for like 70% off. Later that afternoon I drove up to Chandler and volunteered for about 2.5 hrs at the Chandler Public Library (I love the library).
Today I spent all day in a moving van. We picked up a ton of furniture. I'm getting to be a pro mover and packer (that is not an advert for help, though if you really need it...). On the plus side, I got lunch out of it, I also go to take a nap (Christy who I do the pick-ups with and I were exhausted so we decided to "rest"), AND I got a fabulous desk/shelf/cabinet thingy that matches my bedroom furniture-FOR FREE! It needs some fixing up but I'm totally stoked. Which is good considering both Christy and I sacrificed some toes in order to get it into my room. :) Now I just have to clean it up and pack my stuff in it. I am satisfied with the past two days' work. They have been successful.
Now that I've caught up, I'm going away. I've some homework to do and want to take a nap first. Napping makes everything better...even homework.

Surrender
I give in...I've finally joined the throngs on facebook, so I figured I might as well go all the way and do a blog too. It seems everyone has one now though my life won't be nearly as interesting as some. Still we'll see how it goes. And we'll see if anyone even reads it. ;^D
